One of every five Romanians of working age (20-64 years old) has lived in another EU country in 2017. This equals to 19.7%, which is the highest share of the EU, according to data from the European Statistical Institute EUROSTAT.
The share of Romanians abroad is the highest in the EU, increasing from 7.4% in 2007, when Romania joined the EU, by 12.3% for the last 10 years.
Around 3.8% of the EU citizens of working age have lived in another member state in 2017, according to EUROSTAT. Most of them are from Lithuania (15%), Croatia (14%), Portugal (13.9%), Latvia (12.9%) and Bulgaria (12.5%). The least are from Germany (1%), Great Britain (1.1%), Sweden and France (1.3%).
Only 16.9% of the Romanians living abroad have a higher education, which is also close to the average for the country. In the meantime, almost 1/3 of the Europeans living abroad have a higher education.
Research among the city population in Romania shows, that 21% of the people living in the cities plan to emigrate in the next two years.
